12 Dangerous Things Doctors Do (and How to Defend Yourself)

Someone I know was taken to the hospital earlier this week with chest pain. He had all the symptoms of a heart attack.
A few days later, after extensive testing and much worry, he was told everything was fine and allowed to go home, Dr. Coleman writes .
There was nothing wrong with him. Absolutely nothing.
His symptoms were all caused by treatment he had received for medical problems he didn’t have.
This happens all the time and is nothing new.
Fifty years ago, I reported that one in six hospital patients was there because they had been made ill by doctors. Today, it’s even worse. Doctors are now the leading cause of illness and death.
Here are twelve of the many ways doctors make people sick. (More another time.)
- They try to diagnose patients over the phone or Zoom and get the diagnosis wrong. It’s impossible to treat patients over the phone or Zoom. Any doctor who consistently tries to do this is an idiot and should be avoided.
- They fail to connect symptoms and reach a single diagnosis. Multiple coexisting conditions are common in people over 60, but rare in young adults. If a 30- or 40-year-old has two seemingly separate new problems, there’s a good chance they’re related. Don’t let a doctor fob you off.
- If a patient develops new symptoms after treatment, there’s a good chance the treatment is the cause of the new symptoms. (That’s Coleman’s first law. There are twelve laws.) Always keep this in mind.
- Doctors prescribe too many medications. Sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and asthma medications, for example, are often prescribed for years, even though they’re only needed for a very short time. Is your prescription really necessary? (But it’s often important to gradually reduce the number of pills if necessary.)
- Some doctors treat high blood pressure too intensively, which can cause hypotension, which can be uncomfortable and dangerous. Blood pressure often rises in the doctor’s office and drops at home. Patients who use blood pressure medication should purchase a blood pressure monitor and monitor their own blood pressure. It is possible to lower your blood pressure so that you don’t need medication.
- Doctors often overlook chronic, common, and highly treatable problems, such as vitamin B12 deficiency.
- Steroids are often overprescribed, which can cause significant problems that can be very serious. Consult your doctor if you are taking steroids long-term. However, never suddenly stop taking medication without advice and assistance.
- Doctors have traditionally overprescribed antibiotics. Today, they prescribe too few. That’s why sepsis is now an endemic cause of death.
- Doctors routinely prescribe statins, even when there may be no good reason. Pharmaceutical companies encourage this, but it won’t surprise you that statins can cause problems. Too many doctors simply do what pharmaceutical companies tell them to.
- Doctors ignore patients’ instincts. If someone thinks they or a family member is truly ill, that should be taken seriously.
- Too many surgeries are performed that are not essential or life-saving. Is your surgery necessary? Could you live without it? Remember that all surgeries are potentially dangerous.
- Vaccines. (But you probably already expected that.) Read all about vaccines before getting them. It’s your body and your life. You have to decide for yourself whether to vaccinate for yourself and your children. Get the facts and ask questions.
