This is All Our Rulers Have to Offer Us
Pentagon contractor Elon Musk , currently the richest person in the world, has posted a video clip showing how people can use his AI video generation tool Grok Imagine to create an image of a woman’s face saying, “I will always love you.”
The AI-generated clip looks fake and creepy, and everything about Musk’s post is downright depressing. But it’s not as fake, creepy, and depressing as the capitalist dystopia that spawned it, writes Caitlin Johnstone .
This is all the ruling class has to offer. Fake love. Fake connection. Worthless technological tricks at the expense of our dying biosphere.
The underlying argument for continuing the capitalist experiment, even though it destroys our ecosystem, is that these mega-billionaires will save us all with green energy and take the surplus population of humanity to the stars to colonize the Milky Way, which is a horrific prospect in itself .
But that won’t even happen. They know they’ll never colonize Mars. We’re no closer to answering the question of how to keep humans alive, completely separated from Earth’s biosphere, than we were a thousand years ago; human spaceflight has so far consisted of glorified diving expeditions where everything necessary for survival is imported directly from the planet with which our anatomy is intimately intertwined.
And meanwhile, ecocidal capitalism continues to burn our world.
That’s it. Once they ‘ve exhausted the generative AI scam and sold a few million AI sex robots that cost as much as cars, they’ll essentially run out of ideas. Maybe someone will invent an app that lets people sell their kidneys and have them delivered to the buyer via drone or something, but that’s about all there is to profit-driven technological innovation. And from then on, the plan is to amass as many resources as possible and hide in a bunker somewhere while the world burns.
And meanwhile, they’re not even happy. The richest man in the world says he has no social life and works almost every waking hour, and now he’s projecting his own loneliness onto the rest of the world by telling everyone how amazing it is that you can have an AI create an image of a woman’s face and tell you it will always love you.
Yes, kids, work your asses off, get a little lucky, put all your blood, sweat, tears, and time into winning the capitalist game, and you too can one day be as miserable and alienated as Elon Reeve Musk.
These are the kinds of people who rule our world. These are the people who hold the helm of human civilization and determine the future of our species.
There’s nothing healthy about this. There’s nothing functional about this. We need drastic, revolutionary changes, and fast, because these freaks are driving us to our doom.
