Mr. Zelensky Goes to Washington (Again)

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky is returning to the White House on January 28 to discuss the Russia-Ukraine War. The visit ostensibly concerns a proposed twenty-point “peace plan” that European Union “elites” have constructed to counter President Trump’s ongoing peace negotiations with Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin. Given that the European proposal essentially denies Russia any of its stated military objectives, Zelensky’s efforts appear to be little more than another theatrical scene designed to demonstrate to the world his (insincere) willingness to sue for peace.
President Trump has already hinted that he expects little of value to come from Zelensky’s return to the White House. He told Politico after Christmas that Ukraine’s holdover president (who has remained in office nearly two years beyond his elected term by declaring a state of martial law) “doesn’t have anything until I approve it…So we’ll see what he’s got.” Still, President Trump continues to give Zelensky and Europe’s mouthy warmongers (or as Europe’s militarily weak but loud and threatening “leaders” prefer to describe themselves, “the coalition of the willing”) every opportunity to bark like small dogs, run in circles, nip at America’s heels, and pee on the Oval Office carpet.
Zelensky’s visit comes after Ukraine’s president/dictator made a number of controversial statements in the lead-up to Christmas. While speaking at a European Union-arranged press conference in Brussels, Zelensky all but admitted that he and Europe’s aristocratic ruling class had secret plans for Ukraine’s future that first required President Trump’s death or departure. “The United States currently does not see us in NATO. Everything in our life is ‘for now.’ The position may change in the future,” Zelensky said confidently before adding, “Politicians change, some live, some die.” While President Trump, Vice President Vance, and Secretary of War Hegseth have stated clearly that Ukraine will not be admitted as a member of NATO, Europe’s éminences grise have apparently assured Z-Man that things will change quickly once Trump is “gone.”
Then on Christmas Eve, President/Dictator Zelensky (dressed in all black as is his sartorial wont) delivered an address to the Ukrainian people in which he prayed for President Putin’s death. Taken together with Zelensky’s prior allusion to Trump’s passing, the comedian-turned-make-believe-Churchill now putatively in charge of Ukraine appeared to have the disappearances of Trump and Putin at the top of his macabre Christmas wishlist. Sure sounds like a dependable and strategic partner whose angry, petulant outbursts have nothing to do with a mood-altering cocaine habit!
However much my Cold War memories have left me perpetually wary of Russia, I have never believed the U.S.-NATO proxy war in Ukraine was worth the inherent risks of a wider European war or, God forbid, a nuclear confrontation. The disputed territories at the heart of this conflict — Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhia, and Crimea — were part of the Russian Empire, have much more in common both culturally and linguistically with Russia than Ukraine today, and have voted overwhelmingly to separate from Ukraine and affiliate with the Russian Federation. Yet “Napoleon” Zelensky and his fevered band of European Union misfits, provocateurs, and saboteurs climb upon their high horses to lecture the world about “self-determination,” “sovereignty,” and “democracy.”
Given that the people of these disputed territories have voted to leave Ukraine and that the Russian Federation has de facto control over most of the region in question, one might reasonably conclude that “democracy” and “self-determination” have settled the issue of “sovereignty” for good. But Z-Man and Europe’s residual feudal lords continue to rally the continent’s commoners to prepare for war against Russia in defense of Russian-speaking provinces whose people wish to join the Russian Federation but — in the name of the “rules-based-order,” “democracy,” and European Union superiority! — must be forced to remain second-class citizens of Ukraine! Never has a cause been so just since Don Quixote was tilting at windmills!
Most people who see war firsthand and live to walk away do not romanticize it in later years. There are real heroes during combat who win battles and save lives but most would have preferred to avoid those engagements entirely. War is filled with senseless violence, and the line separating those who survive from those who don’t is bent and blurry. When governments organize men to murder men organized by other governments, those on both sides of the murdering eventually begin to wonder why so many of their friends perished while so many in government profited.
Right now it is terribly obvious that far too many government officials in Europe are profiting from the Russia-Ukraine War.
Members of the United Kingdom’s military and security services are warning the British people that Russia may invade at any time. Germany is spending money that it doesn’t have to expand its defense capabilities. The European Commission — that authoritarian body headed by Queen Ursula von der Leyen — wants to confiscate the Russian Federation’s assets for its own purposes. No matter how awful the reality of war, politicians and corporations always look for ways to benefit politically and financially.
Europe’s “Big Three” leaders — the U.K.’s Prime Minister Starmer, France’s President Macron, and Germany’s Chancellor Merz — have “popular” support somewhere between ten and twenty percent! Their countries are in various stages of pre-civil war due to decades of mass immigration that have splintered their societies and transformed their once unified nations into multinational zones of occupation. Zeal for authoritarian socialism has led European governments to pursue suicidal “green energy” policies that have crippled their economies, suffocated innovation, and condemned their citizens to future poverty. Now that much of the European electorate has awakened to the many ways in which Europe’s “leaders” have condemned the continent to obsolescence, the European ruling class has frantically concluded that it can survive only if it imposes widespread censorship, speech codes, and mass surveillance, while arbitrarily reconfiguring which “rights” lowly citizens will be permitted to have.
For European leaders desperate to escape the consequences of decades of failed policies, war with Russia is an expedient distraction. Don’t like higher food and fuel prices? Blame Russia! Don’t like social media censors scouring the Internet for “disinformation”? Blame Russia! Don’t like higher taxes? Blame Russia! Don’t like the millions of unassimilated Islamic militants who rape children, burn down synagogues and Christian churches, steal taxpayer dollars, and finance domestic terrorism? Blame Russia (I guess)!
Across Europe, the political “elites” have been repeating the same refrain for four years: This is no time to complain about domestic problems; Europe is under attack!
Moreover, during times of war, there is so much money to be made. Governments get to steal more from citizens in the form of taxes because…war! Central banks and politically connected financial institutions get to print money and inflate the currency-denominated value of assets because…war! Defense companies get to make more money than ever before because…war! Investment houses get to profit from the defense companies that help blow things up and then get to profit from the engineering, infrastructure, and construction projects required to rebuild because…war! While Ukrainian and Russian servicemembers die and European parents are bombarded with enough fear porn to conclude that they must sacrifice their children to future conscription, the worst people in Europe make money.
As every sensible economist knows, if you want more of something, subsidize it. For four years, U.S.-NATO and Europe have been throwing money at the Russia-Ukraine War, and the world has predictably gotten more of it. At some point, sane people who want to put an end to the slaughter and prevent the possibility of even more slaughter on a continental scale must say, “Enough is enough,” and walk away. War may be a boon to politicians and bankers, but it is life-or-death for everyone else.
