Will the U.S. and Europe go to War Over Greenland?

Will the U.S. and Europe go to War Over Greenland?

The Europeans have formed a weak coalition of the willing to defend Greenland against the United States.

In short, the answer is no. As one media commentator aptly noted this week , European leaders have less backbone than a jellyfish, so all their wobbly concerns about Donald Trump’s desire to annex the Danish Arctic will achieve little in the way of armed conflict, reports the Strategic Culture Foundation .

There may be some theatrics, such as the deployment of European troops in Greenland this weekend. There will be plenty of bravado from European politicians. But ultimately, the vassals will be brought into line.

The fact that there’s a theoretical question, however, reveals how abnormal international relations have become under the 47th president of the United States. In a strange way, this is a good thing, because it exposes the fraud and bankruptcy of the “moral West.”

For eight decades, since the end of World War II, the US has championed its European allies. The transatlantic alliance, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), was intended to be the cornerstone of Western democracy, peace, security, and international law.

Now, with Trump’s unadulterated ambition to annex Greenland, even by military force, NATO’s entire facade has been turned upside down. The alliance is under attack from its supposed leader, the United States.

Denmark and other European states are desperate, saying that if Trump follows through on his threats to “conquer Greenland,” it will mean the end of NATO.

Bring it on.

This week, Danish and Greenlandic diplomats met at the White House with Trump administration officials, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to advocate for respect for the sovereign rights of Denmark and Greenland.

Trump has no regard for diplomatic pleasantries. He continues to insist that Greenland come under American control and does not rule out the use of military force. The US president has declared the annexation a matter of national security for the US, as he believes the Arctic region is at risk of being seized by China and Russia.

China has rebuked Trump for using this as a threat to justify his territorial conquest.

Russia is the largest Arctic region, and its Northern Sea Route is a strategically important shipping route between Europe and Asia. It doesn’t need Greenland.

Trump’s pretext of national security is laughable. He shamelessly plays the “threat” card of Russia and China to cover up his naked imperialist land theft. This is precisely what Americans and Europeans hypocritically and baselessly accuse Russia and China of.

Greenland is the world’s largest non-continental island, with an area of over 2.1 million square kilometers. That’s roughly three times the size of Texas. The Arctic region is rich in oil, gas, and minerals that the United States covets for its economic future. The calculation is the same as that of Trump’s criminal aggression against Venezuela.

If it were solely a matter of national security, the US would have an air defense base in Greenland under a historic agreement with Denmark. Trump’s dismissive remark that Denmark isn’t militarily strong enough to defend Greenland (with two dog sleds, he mocked) could easily be resolved by the US strengthening its existing base capabilities.

Citing Russia and China as threats is therefore a cynical excuse by Trump to expropriate the vast Arctic resources.

In any case, the Danish government has dismissed Trump’s concerns about the risk of Russia and China taking over Greenland.

But he who sleeps with dogs, wakes up with fleas. Denmark and the other European lackeys have shamefully played the Russian threat card regarding Europe’s security. In doing so, they have contributed to creating the false narrative that Trump is now using to seize the Danish territory of Greenland.

Historically, the European Union has become a subservient vassal of the United States. It has bent over backward to appease Washington for every violation of international law and every illegal aggression the Americans have committed. Most recently, when Trump attacked Venezuela and kidnapped President Nicolás Maduro, Europeans cheered instead of standing up for international law. Now that Trump is threatening Iran with war for his attempts to orchestrate an attack on the regime, Europeans are once again cheering the aggression.

Washington’s systematic and ruthless violation of international law and the United Nations Charter for decades has been made possible by Europe’s complicity or cowardly acquiescence. The resulting impunity has led to open disregard for international norms under the Trump presidency.

The American imperial power has no respect for international law or sovereignty, as Trump arrogantly boasts. Its European vassals, with their feeble impotence, are treated with the contempt they deserve.

In September 2022, the Americans decided to disrupt Europe’s strategic energy supply from Russia by sabotaging the Nord Stream pipelines, bringing the European economies to their knees. And the Europeans didn’t even protest. They further humiliated themselves by waging a pointless proxy war against Russia in Ukraine and destroying their economies through excessive spending on the American military mafia.

No wonder then that Trump is fully exploiting European weakness by grabbing Greenland.

As our columnist Ron Ridenour has documented in several articles , Denmark is one of Europe’s most despicable vassals, serving as an intelligence and propaganda tool for years, carrying out Uncle Sam’s orders. Denmark was a founding member of NATO in 1949. Copenhagen was also a Nazi traitor during World War II; its subsequent complicity with American imperialism was therefore only logical.

So, when the American overlord tightens the screws on his vassals, what will they do? Nothing.

This weekend, the Danes, British, French, Germans, Dutch, Norwegians, and others will send a symbolic number of troops to Greenland in solidarity with Trump over Operation Arctic Endurance.

How ridiculous. For the past year, the Europeans have been talking about forming a coalition of the willing to deploy in Ukraine, supposedly to defend the neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv against Russia. Now they’ve formed a paltry coalition of the willing to defend Greenland against the United States.

Yet there is a silver lining to all this. The absurdity of it all is instructive because it reveals several things: the fraud that is NATO, the lawlessness and impunity of American aggression, and the utter moral bankruptcy of the European “allies.”
