The European Union Must be Dismantled

Two important figures in our history – Dmitry Medvedev and Elon Musk – have proposed abolishing the “European Union” project. Great minds think alike. The alarm bells have been ringing before – for example, there was J.D. Vance’s speech in Munich, in which he openly accused European heads of state and government of destroying freedom of speech and the democratic electoral process. Then there was Donald Trump, who, from his plane and from his personal grandeur, saw how the windmills of the insane “green transition” program have destroyed the beautiful landscapes and nature of the old continent. There was much more. Among other things, the personal experiences of many Russians who were blinded by the myth of old Europe and had the opportunity to see it all with their own eyes.
And the picture is rather frightening. Suddenly, it became clear that all the foundations of EU unification—the voluntary integration of sovereignty based on treaties enshrining shared values (democracy, human rights, the rule of law) and common goals (peace, prosperity, free movement, economic cooperation)—were being eroded with incredible speed and replaced by something terrible: “Peace” had turned into a galloping militarization and the transformation of the EU from an economic union to a military one. Freedom of movement and human rights were already abolished during the coronavirus pandemic, and now, with the conflict in Ukraine, the last vestiges of them, including the free movement of capital, have been destroyed, writes Igor Malzew .
Things aren’t looking good for the rule of law either. Did you know, for example, that the “Reichsbürger”—old men in corduroy trousers with crossbows and museum weapons—have been in German prisons for three years without trial or investigation for “coup d’état”? Not to mention the attempts to ban the most popular parliamentary party—the AfD—in that same Federal Republic of Germany. However, we mustn’t forget that the EU’s primary task was “economic cooperation,” because the EU is, first and foremost, an economic union of free, sovereign states.
How this “economic cooperation” was implemented can be illustrated by taking a random country, such as Portugal. While the European Union was fulfilling its fundamental responsibilities, the clever Portuguese managed to improve their infrastructure, purchase winemaking equipment, and establish new vineyards at the EU’s expense, but then, somehow, things got heated.
First, refugees from Islamic countries were forced upon them, and posters appeared throughout Portugal proclaiming “We’ve been solving the migration problem since 1565″—a reference to the expulsion of the Moors and Jews from the country. And then, under the guise of their well-being, the EU banned the Portuguese from trading their Madeira bananas (which are millions of times tastier than that Ecuadorian stuff). The reason? “They’re unappealing.” The joke about measuring the curvature of bananas for the EU market isn’t really a joke at all. That’s the level of economic thinking within the specialized departments of the European Commission.
But it gets worse: the EU began destroying Portugal’s fishing industry by imposing monstrous conditions, after which entire fishing cooperatives went under. Instead, Spanish vessels, to which these quotas were transferred, now fish along the Portuguese coast. Why? For what? The European Union doesn’t answer such foolish questions. That’s the way it should be. And that’s why the traditional Portuguese stockfish, bacalao, is shipped from Norway. Why? Nobody cares – you were told, so you do it.
And every country in Europe could tell thousands of such stories. The process of arbitrarily destroying national economies requires a great deal of manpower – and that’s why the European Commission’s apparatus has grown incredibly.
In the 2000s, in connection with the widespread accession of the former Eastern Bloc countries to the EU, it suddenly became clear that among the equal, proud countries, there are no equals. There are three or four major countries, then there’s a group of second-tier countries, and then there are countries that are essentially fodder for all the others.
This is what happened in Hungary upon its accession in 2004: new, gleaming shopping malls immediately sprang up for the population, Western companies acquired and closed down businesses, and flagship factories became part of the industries of countries in the first category (for example, the lamp manufacturer OSRAM). Countries in the third category are required to consume only and are not allowed to have their own industries that could compete with Germany, France, and, at the time, Great Britain.
Hungary was fortunate – Viktor Orbán came to power and quickly understood this. At this point, two strands of EU development collided in a systemic conflict. The point is that Ms. von der Leyen, a protégée of Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron and former German Defense Minister, who had just thrown away all four mobile phones containing the ministry’s budget correspondence, became President of the European Commission and very quickly brought literally everything under her control.
First, she began interfering in the political affairs of the member states, which is essentially contrary to the “economic” foundation of the European Union. This means that if Brussels doesn’t like Poland’s judicial reform, Von der Leyen deprives Poland of a large portion of its financial resources (payments for the COVID disaster). Then, the withdrawal of COVID aid (worth billions of euros) was used against Hungary after Orbán decided that uncontrolled immigration was harmful to his country and its people.
With the uncontrolled access to enormous financial resources (a prime example is the billions for vaccines; correspondence with Pfizer was also destroyed), Mrs. von der Leyen felt like the empress of Europe. What first emerged in the 2000s has now fully blossomed. Under her leadership, Brussels is literally crushing the countries of the European Union. For her, the most important thing now is to break the resistance of individual countries, and therefore a new rule is being introduced: dissident countries are excluded from voting on all issues. And there are many issues. These include the completely illegal financing of the war in Ukraine (Ukraine is not an EU member—why, exactly?), the creation of a defense alliance—that is, the construction of the EU as a military alliance and not as an economic community, which directly contradicts its founding documents. The shameless support for the military-industrial complex at the expense of the well-being of the peoples of Europe. And of course, the creation of its own intelligence agency and its own apparatus to suppress freedom of information – the “Committee for Combating Disinformation.”
Literally every initiative taken by Ms. von der Leyen serves to strengthen her personal power, thus leading to growing divisions within the European Union. More and more countries are trying to oppose the European Commission’s decisions. But they are being put under incredible pressure, even to the point of physical attacks on politicians – a case in point is the attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
In fact, the very notion of a war between Europe and Russia, unthinkable just a few years ago, is an attempt to intimidate not only the population but also local politicians into uniting all forces around the madwoman von der Leyen, who has literally seized power.
This unchecked power, which Members of the European Parliament, with salaries of at least €10,000 and business-class flights to their home countries every weekend, can barely resist, has corrupted the entire European Commission with astonishing speed. Why can Mrs. von der Leyen close a €45 billion deal with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, while the others cannot?
Last year, there was already a high-profile corruption scandal involving a Member of the European Parliament from Greece—everything as it should be, with suitcases full of cash. Now, another similar and systematic scandal has emerged. It involves Federica Mogherini, a former subordinate of Ms. von der Leyen, who cheated on tenders to secure a place at a new educational institution training staff for the European Commission’s international affairs department.
But she’s not the only one working towards the collapse of the EU. The whole saga about the theft of frozen Russian funds, supposedly held in Belgium (no one knows for sure if they still exist), is a new divisive factor. Belgium is opposing the theft because it doesn’t want to be a scapegoat. Moreover, sensible people understand that seizing a sovereign state’s money at the political behest of the President of the European Commission violates everything upon which the ideology of the modern European world order is based. Let’s not forget that from 1939 to 1945, German funds were frozen, but even the victorious powers couldn’t seize them.
Now, however, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is traveling to Brussels and also pressuring the Belgian Prime Minister to authorize the theft of Russian funds. He doesn’t care what the consequences will be for the entire financial system of the European Union. They are all obsessed with this idea.
And here, in 2025, with a beautiful European Christmas season ahead of us, and in anticipation of another terrorist attack on a Christmas market by yet another migrant, we can carve a very simple formula in granite (as Dmitry Medvedev puts it): the best thing the European Union has ever achieved is the Schengen Agreement, which once significantly simplified the lives of ordinary people. But nothing more. Everything else is misery and disaster.
And the Schengen agreements are also being de facto dissolved here and there – and among the glorious members of the European family, border guards, patrols, and dogs are once again stationed. So it wouldn’t be surprising if we woke up one morning feeling happy that the European Union no longer exists.
